About Friends of Harrowgate Park

Friends of Harrowgate Park empowers our neighborhood’s diverse community to activate and advocate for a vibrant, welcoming green space.

WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT

Our Core Values

DIVERSE COMMUNITY

Friends of Harrowgate Park engages our diverse community of business owners, nonprofits, schools, and local residents of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds. We welcome the involvement of all neighbors whether owners, and renters.

EMPOWERMENT

Friends of Harrowgate Park is a platform that allows neighbors to have a say in the park’s affairs, including the use of external resources. They aim to educate about the park’s ecology and history and empower neighbors to implement their own programming for the park.

Welcoming

Friends of Harrowgate Park fosters neighbors’ enjoyment of the space. We promote a healthy, safe, and attractive park through programming, clean-ups, beautification projects, and the reporting of maintenance issues.

Sonja Bingham:

is a native Californian currently residing in Harrowgate. She enjoys sports—playing, coaching and watching—and working in the community. She is also quite the baker. She has three adult children, who are the loves of her life, and a very special baby: Bob Bingham, her five-year-old Chihuahua. Sonja’s motivating ideology is twofold: “Leave a place better than the way you found it” and “Be the change you want to see.” These statements capture her driving force perfectly.

Margo Geppert:

has nearly a decade of experience working in community development and is currently a Senior Project Manager at East Freedman & Main. She has supported Kensington and Harrowgate projects over the last six years like Safe Hub Youth Soccer in Scanlon Park, Cantina La Martina at 2800 D St, PB&J at 3415 Kensington, El Centro de Estudiantes at 3360 Frankford Ave, and many more. She has been a resident for over four years and loves supporting events at Harrowgate Park like our annual movie nights, and spring/ summer/ winter festivals.

Jasmin Velez:

My name is Jasmin Velez. I currently work as the Community Organizer for the Kensington Corridor Trust. I have been living in the greater Kensington area for 21 years, with the last five specifically in Harrowgate. I want to be part of the Friends of Harrowgate Park board because I value the quality of our park and would love to see it flourish further. I value transparency and collaboration and believe that for a more robust and healthier community we must all work together and be honest in our journey towards our goals.

I have dedicated many years of my career to environmental justice initiatives that have included but are not limited to park safety, community garden spaces, tree plantings, and food education. I am proud of the work I have accomplished, and the relationships I have built throughout the city to continue to support these efforts in our community and beyond.

In addition to this work, I have also built great relationships with people in the community and have supported various engagement efforts with organizations and with neighbors. I enjoy working with others and problem-solving ways to ensure our community can
benefit from the great things green spaces and the like provide for our health. For the last three years, I have served both on the Harrowgate Civic Board and the Neighborhood Gardens Trust, which showcases my commitment to the community and also my work in the greening world. My work has predominantly been in the nonprofit sector, though my background is in Medical Anthropology. I obtained my Master of Arts in 2017 and consider myself a practicing anthropologist, because I like to apply what I learned in the field directly. In the end, all of my experiences—whether personal, academic, or professional—are unified by my love for working with people to problem solve and thinking about the ways in which we interact with our environment.

Sandy Wells:

is a native of Brooklyn, NYC and longtime resident of Harrowgate, where she has lived happily since the early 1980s. Sandy loves spending time with her dogs, enjoying nature, and feeding the squirrels in Harrowgate Park. Sandy would be honored to be a part of Friends of Harrowgate Park because she is a strong advocate for ensuring that the Park remains a place where neighbors and children can commune with nature and each other. Nothing would bring her more satisfaction than being able to contribute to the health of the place she loves dearly.

Although Sandy loves Harrowgate Park, she is proud of our neighborhood at large and takes pride in working with the Harrowgate Civic Association and fellow residents to keep Harrowgate safe and clean. As a retired veterinarian, Sandy loves animals and has her own personal “zoo”. Sandy’s parrots and dogs are also huge fans of Harrowgate Park!

Danielle Walker:

Philly native that has recently moved back to the Harrowgate neighborhood about five years ago. I work for both Jefferson Health and Montgomery County Community College. You will often see me as I walk the neighborhood daily with my four-legged companions. My belief is to be the change you want to see and become a part of the growing movement to take back these streets and parks. Whatever I can do to be apart of the solution, I am  always happy to help.

John C Zerbe:

is a Philly muralist, artist, active community member, advocate and resident of Kensington. He’s an active participant in multiple civic groups in the neighborhood and works with several non-profit organizations and libraries working to improve the quality of life in Kensington and its greenspaces. He currently works part-time as the Community Engagement and Program Director for Kensington Voice. His goal is to connect people and help resolve social issues that exist within the neighborhood.

He also just recently opened an art gallery, @vizion_gallery on Instagram, located at 3312 Kensington Ave. So far, he has hosted two exhibitions that highlighted exclusively local artists and creative minds.
