Friends of Harrowgate Park empowers our neighborhood’s diverse community to activate and advocate for a vibrant, welcoming green space.
Located at the corner of E Tioga Street & the 3400 block of Kensington Avenue, Harrowgate Park lies in the Harrowgate neighborhood of Philadelphia. Harrowgate was established in 1784 by Capt. George Esterly, a Revolutionary War veteran, discovered springs in what is now the site of Harrowgate Square (Park). The spring water was pronounced healthful by Dr. Benjamin Rush, and Esterly established a spa there, with gardens, overnight accommodations, food and drink, occasional concerts, and coach service from Second and Market Sts. in Philadelphia.
Today, Harrowgate Park is easily reached by bus, Market-Frankford El line (Tioga Station), or bike. Harrowgate Park is owned by the City and under the management of the Department of Parks & Recreation.
